This August's EVOO from Trás-os-Montes.

—CLUB EXCLUSIVE—

This month, the Olive Oil Club is returning to Portugal. This time, to the Trás-os-Montes region in the North of the country.

Introduced to us by fellow Olive Oil Club producers, Raquel and Ricardo Múrias represent this new generation of farmers—re-envisioning their family crops into a business that champions quality and regeneration.

Meet the producers: Raquel and Ricardo Múrias.

When one farmer introduces us to another, it’s such a beautiful sign that we’re doing something right. This is the case of Raquel and Ricardo, friends with Marije and Edgar, who we also work with in the Olive Oil Club.

It also means that they tick every box—from quality to regeneration. “Our olive groves are living spaces, rich in biodiversity”, Raquel explains. Native plants, wildflowers, and grazing sheep and goats all naturally balance the soil.

The region.

The name Trás-os-Montes translates to literally “Behind the Mountains”. A mystical place, quite unknown for centuries, representing Portugal at its most remote.

This isn’t the Portugal of holiday-makers and expat enclaves. It’s an area isolated from the sun-seekers of the South, where the traditional culture has continued well into modern times.

The Tua rover splits the town of Mirandela, with its famous Roman bridge, in a region known for weather extremes. It shares the Iberian peninsula’s boiling summers, but also pairs this with freezing winters.

The culture has been defined by both the weather and the isolation, but the olive production—as we see in so many remote corners of the world—is intricately woven into the fabric of the landscape and community.
